Content Management

One of the most-used phrases in the information technology industry proclaims that "content is king." But merely having content is meaningless unless it's relevant, engaging, and properly managed.

What is content management?
Content management is a set of processes, tools, and organizational structures that puts everything into place. It is the engine behind keeping the Web site up to date, full of valuable information and constant feature enhancements that assure consistency. Here's how it works:
  • Based on the strategy defined for the site, content is acquired, created from scratch, or adapted in various formats (text, graphics, audio, video) - as well as in multiple cultures - depending on requirements
  • Content is then "managed" through an editorial workflow that follows the steps of adding, deleting, and modifying components to ensure that corporate objectives are met and user experience is optimized
  • Workflow processes are also established for various forms of review, integration of content into its environment (within an HTML/graphic design template, for example, or an online form connected to "back end" programming), development of new or enhanced site features, and final quality assurance testing
  • Content is delivered as part of the total Web site solution, then monitored for review and update as part of the ongoing, dynamic life of the Web site.

Why the emphasis on content management?
In this process, content is managed by specific members of the project team who work closely with the client. Separate workflows control the contribution and collaboration of team members such as graphic designers, site developers, and technical developers and programmers.

At the same time, custodians of content must balance the need to develop content with the need to integrate that content into the other components of the site. Content management facilitates this process, enabling the site to evolve quickly and seamlessly - lowering costs, ensuring consistent corporate branding, and reducing "time to Web."

Content management becomes even more important in a global economy that's becoming wired to the Web at lightning speed. Market pressures create new demands for increasingly complex online solutions:
  • The need to work with many different sources of content (such as databases, legacy systems, and third party providers), in increasing volume and multiple formats
  • The need for greater collaboration of content contributors
